The 10 precepts of "The Kata"
These precepts/rules are the basis of all kata and students are expected to build upon these to maximize their skill in Karate and the effectiveness of each of their kata.
1. Zanshin - a state of readiness throughout the whole kata, and beyond.
2. Kiai - demonstration of a martial shout to show power & control
3. Kime or Kokyu - understanding of the importance of breathing and posture to the kata
4. Ketai No Hoji - understand the importance of each technique's positions and its importance in the flow of the kata
5. Tyakugan - a focus on the targetting of each technique used in the kata
6. Jushin No Antei - maintaining a strong stance and centre of gravity while both stationary and in motion
7. Waza No Kankyu - control of the speed of each motion within the kata whether this be offensive or defensive
8. Inyo - appreciate the active and passive techniques of kata to understand the variation on attacking and defending motions
9. Yoi No Kisin - the spirit of being ready, be prepared for your opponents in kata
10. Embusen - the tactical understanding of the angles of motion in kata

In Shotokan Karate there are 26 kata which are recognized by the "Shotokan Karate International Federation" headed by Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa (10th dan black belt) these are:
In the Dalry Katsumushi Karate Club the first Kata students learn is called Kihon Kata or "Beginner's Kata" and is an adaptation of Heian Shodan.
