Classes always begin with warm up exercises, these vary each week from running to press ups to stretches but are designed to minimize the risk of injury whilst taking part in the class.
Classes are typically broken down into 3 distinct sections, these being:
1. Kihon - these are the basic techniques which Karate is built upon and range from single blocking or striking techniques to more complex combination movements at more senior grades as well as one on one practice.
2. Kata - Shotokan karate has 26 official "kata" as well as several beginner kata called "Kihon kata" - a kata is described as "a chorographed series of techniques & patterns of movement"
3. Kumite - this is one on one sparring, typically beginning as simple blocking and countering techniques but progressing to freestyle kumite where you will be taught how to defend and expect unannounced attacks.
The club also does basic self defense training including grabbing & sweeping techniques as well as developing power and technique through the use of pads and focus pads.
